How to Find a Hairstylist Who Understands Mixed & Biracial Hair

A bad haircut is frustrating for anyone. A bad haircut from a stylist who didn't know what to do with your child's texture in the first place is a specific kind of frustrating — and for many parents of mixed and biracial kids, it's happened more than once. Here's how to find someone who won't put you in that position again.

Look for Specific Language, Not Just "All Textures Welcome"

Plenty of salon websites say they serve "all hair types," but that phrase alone doesn't tell you much. Look instead for stylists who specifically mention curly, coily, or textured hair training, or who list certifications like DevaCurl or similar curl-specific programs. A portfolio full of only straight or loosely wavy styles is a signal, even if the website says otherwise.

Ask Very Direct Questions Before You Book

• "Do you regularly work with 3A–4C curl patterns, or specifically mixed-texture hair?"

• "Do you cut curls dry, or only wet?" (Many curl specialists cut dry, since curls fall differently than straight, wet hair.)

• "Can you show me examples of similar textures you've styled?"

Use Your Own Network First

Other parents of mixed and biracial kids are often the fastest, most reliable source of a real recommendation — local parenting groups, biracial-family communities, and even other customers at your regular hair care shop are worth asking before you cold-book a stylist from a search result.

Prepping for the First Appointment

Bring your child's hair in its natural state if possible — freshly straightened or heavily styled hair won't show a new stylist what they're actually working with. It's also completely reasonable to ask for a shorter "consultation" appointment first, before committing to a full cut, if a salon offers it.

A stylist who already understands mixed and biracial texture will ask you questions too — about products you use, how the hair behaves day to day, and what's been frustrating. That back-and-forth is usually the best sign you've found the right person.
