Nighttime Moisture Routine for Coily Hair: The LOC Method Explained

Updated: Jul 26

Coily hair loses moisture faster than almost any other hair type, and a lot of that moisture disappears overnight while you sleep. Building a simple nighttime routine around the LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) can make the difference between waking up to dry, frizzy coils and waking up to soft, defined ones.

What Is the LOC Method?

LOC stands for Liquid, Oil, Cream — the order in which you layer products to lock hydration into the hair shaft. Applying them in this sequence traps water inside the strand instead of letting it evaporate.

Step 1: Liquid

Start with a water-based leave-in conditioner, or simply spritz your hair with water. This is your actual hydration source — everything after this step is about sealing it in.

Step 2: Oil

Follow with a nourishing oil to seal the moisture from step one. Apply it while your hair is still damp, working it through section by section from root to tip.

Step 3: Cream

Finish with a creamy moisturizer to add an extra layer of sealing and definition, focusing on the ends where hair is oldest and driest.

Protect It Overnight

Once your LOC routine is done, gather your hair loosely into a pineapple or large twists and cover it with a satin or silk bonnet. Cotton pillowcases and bare coils overnight will pull moisture straight out of your strands by morning.

In the Morning

Unwrap gently, fluff your roots, and you should wake up to coils that are still soft and defined rather than dry and matted. If your ends still feel thirsty, a light mist of water followed by a small amount of oil will refresh them without a full restyle.

The LOC method isn't complicated, it just takes consistency. Do it a few nights a week and your coils will hold onto far more moisture than they would on their own.
